Monstera deliciosa 'Aurea' , often called Monstera 'Golden' or 'Marmorata', is a highly sought-after variation of the classic Monstera deliciosa due to its golden or yellow variegation. Its large, dark green leaves, perforated and cut, bear irregular mottling and spots of vibrant yellow color, giving each leaf a unique appearance.
Origin: Like the standard Monstera deliciosa, 'Aurea' is native to the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. It was selected and grown primarily for its variegation characteristics that attract the eye in indoor environments.
Growth: Growth of 'Aurea' may be slightly slower than non-variegata Monstera deliciosa due to its reduced chlorophyll content. It can grow quite large indoors, with leaves that spread widely and stems that may require support for climbing.
Light: This plant prefers bright indirect light to optimize its growth and the intensity of its variegation. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves, while too little light can reduce variegation.
Watering: 'Aurea' requires regular but moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry slightly between waterings. A good practice is to water when the top inch or two of potting soil is dry to the touch.
Substrate: A well-draining potting mix is essential for this Monstera. A substrate rich in organic matter, such as peat moss or coconut fiber mixed with perlite or pine bark, is ideal for maintaining a balance between drainage and moisture retention.
Toxicity: Like other Monstera, 'Aurea' contains calcium oxalate crystals, making it toxic to animals and humans if ingested. It is important to keep it out of reach of pets and children.
Special care: A stake, such as a moss pole, is recommended to help the plant maintain vertical growth and to support the weight of mature leaves. Prune regularly to encourage a bushier growth habit and to remove damaged or excessively old leaves.
